Callawassie Island is situated on the Colleton River located between Beaufort and Hilton Head Island. The Yemassee Indians established settlements and a trading post for commerce with the Europeans many years ago. Later, the island was used to grow sugar cane and today, it is owned and governed by its residential property owners. Callawassie is a private, gated, residential community sitting on 880 acres of land and 11 miles of shoreline. Wooded homesites overlook the golf course, salt marshes, tidal creeks or ponds. The traditional lowcountry style Clubhouse was designed to bring the outdoors inside and overlooks the Golf and Tennis Centers, a large swimming pool with a patio area and the marsh. An award-winning championship 27-hole course was created by Tom Fazio by combining the natural beauty of the island with superb play. Limited membership allows for an unhurried, enjoying and relaxing golf experience. Shop at the golf pro shop for all of your golfing needs. The Tennis Center includes six Har-Tru tennis courts with a pavilion, a tennis pro shop and an on-site tennis pro. The Fitness Center offers both aerobics and exercise equipment as well as a fitness coordinator to assist you with your conditioning goals. The River Club offers casual socializing and includes a community clubhouse, a second swimming pool and a deep water dock for boating, fishing, crabbing and shrimping. Other activities that can be enjoyed from the island are deep sea fishing, inshore fishing and kayaking.
