Beaufort entered its golden era around 1800. It is located on one of the largest Sea Islands, Port Royal Island, which rests along the southeast Atlantic coast. Lovely mansions were built by wealthy owners of cotton, rice and indigo plantations. The architecture originates from the French, Colonial, Spanish-American and Revolutionary. Registered in the National Register of Historic Places are homes, forts, churches, cemeteries, inns and other structures. Many of the homes have been restored from the Civil War and can be enjoyed by touring with professional guides on horse-drawn carriages or bus or simply by walking. Tours of private homes and gardens are available during spring and fall events.
